Brain Matters
The science of Kundalini Yoga offers extensive breath work and medical meditations to develop a good brain. Our respiratory control center is located in the medulla oblongata of the lower brain stem. When doing the conscious breath work we can alter either the thinking brain (cerebral cortex) or the limbic brain (seat of emotions) and change our state of being. The breath is a medium to the emotions, mentality, and physical state of a person. Choosing to practice the breath work everyday is a declaration to be more present in life. The more present we become the easier it is to let go of the past or future. There is a strong belief that a sense of peace is felt within the long deep diaphragm breathing. In peace we erase lines on our face, let go of weight, feel younger, and prosper by our richness in health.
Heather Ferri is employed at Country Meadows in Pittsburgh, PA where she uses Medical Meditations from Kundalini Yoga in the Dementia and Alzeimer’s department. Heather does senior chair programming for senior homes and facilities.
One of the many great Kundalini Yoga sets by Yogi Bhajan that can be adapted to the chair is Basic Spinal Flex Series. This set moves the spinal fluid to the brain allowing the meditation work at the end of the session to add mental clarity. The increase of circulation of the spinal fluid can be linked to helping develop a better memory!
Another favorite set that I adapt to the chair is the Preparatory Exercises for Lungs, Magnetic Field, and Deep Meditation. This set will assist in purifying the blood while expanding the lung capacity. The thyroid and parathyroid secrete adding more circulation and preparing you for deep meditation work.
2.Medical Brain Programs
These techniques are specific for psychiatric disorders, depression, addictions, and personal growth. Referencing expert David S. Shannnahoff-Khalsa and his book “Kundalini Yoga Meditation” I have used several of his protocols for OCD, Depression, and Bi-Polar and have viewed positive results. These programs can be done on a private session or a small group with similar diagnosis.
The most important element to any of these protocols is to do the same one for a specific length of time consistently to allow the old patterns mentally to break and give time for new ones to form.
3. Obesity Programs
Studies show that when weight goes up brainpower goes down. Research is starting to lean towards people who are obese are at greater risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. How can Kundalini Yoga help obesity? By doing medical meditations that address the frontal lobe area of the brain which makes critical choices in everyday life. Also, by doing specific medical meditations that calm down “hot anger” that lingers in the subconscious area of the brain. Learning the many breath techniques will begin the process of getting in touch with the self again and stimulating the glands that will help increase metabolism.
